For Students

Prospective Graduate Students

I will consider applications for doctoral students to begin Fall 2027 in the Joint Doctoral Program in Public Health – Health Behavior track. Prospective students should review current lab projects and publications to assess fit. I also expect to be affiliated with additional Joint Doctoral Programs (pending final approval). Details about what I look for in applications are below.

Current Research: We study language and communication in autism, including communicative feedback and clinical assessment. We are also interested in factors that influence language and communication development and improving research methods. We collaborate with researchers studying language, communication, human development, and public health. Our work uses behavioral methods, including clinical assessment, data science, and to a lesser extent, fNIRS.

How I Evaluate Applicants: I evaluate prospective graduate students holistically, considering how applicants’ experience, skills, and interests demonstrate both excellence and a strong likelihood of success in the graduate program and in my lab. In particular:

  • I read personal statements closely, paying attention to applicants’ research questions and how well they align with my current research, expertise, and ongoing projects.
  • I look for evidence of skills or experiences that would support contributions to the lab’s work.
  • Strong applicants typically have prior experience working with autistic youth or adults, ideally in research settings. Preparation in one or more of the following areas is valuable: clinical assessment, linguistics, meta-science, data science, fNIRS or related methods, and programming (Python, R, etc.).

Other Lab Roles

I will consider applications for a post-baccalaureate lab manager and/or postdoctoral fellow on a rolling basis. These roles require strong time management, self-direction, and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work efficiently and independently. Please reach out by email if interested.

Undergraduate Research Assistants

We generally have a few openings for new undergraduate students to join the lab each year. We will begin processing applications to join the lab for Fall 2026 in May 2026. You can complete this form at any time, but we will not consider applications outside of this time period. Please email the lab after you complete the form.

Contacting Me Before Applying

I am not able to respond to or meet with all prospective applicants prior to the application process. If you choose to reach out, please review the lab’s current projects and recent publications. Emails should include a (1) short description of your research interests and how they align with the lab’s work, (2) a summary of relevant experience, and (3) a CV. Please note that all applicants are reviewed through the formal admissions process, and I do not make admissions decisions independently (i.e., we do not do direct admit).
